DevOps’ adoption helped the organization improve its ability to produce software faster than the normal pace and thereby deliver value to its customers in a faster way.
The agility & speed that was gone missing in earlier days were back in developing and delivering software products. Wikipedia says DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops). It aims to shorten the systems development life cycle and provide continuous delivery with high software quality. DevOps is complementary to agile software development. Several of the DevOps aspects came from the agile methodology.
When we look at the definition in more detail, we realize that DevOps is a cultural and professional movement that stresses communication, collaboration, and integration between software developers and IT operations professionals while automating software delivery and infrastructure changes. The definition also emphasizes building a culture and environment for rapid, frequent, and more reliable delivery of software products.
These days, organizations rely more on DevOps professionals. We see an influx of job postings for DevOps professionals. Many mistook DevOps as a title or as a team. We have seen the IT industry break the organizational silos by adopting IT Infrastructure Library best practices. Treating DevOps as a title or as a team without communication and collaboration within will bring back another silo in the organization.
Hence DevOps is not
a title or a separate team
a tool
only a culture
only automation.
Aligning to DevOps goals, organizations can reduce risk, speed up the flow and improve quality as they focus on smaller and more frequent releases. The culture of communication and collaboration will help in reducing the cost of product iterations and delays. With Consistency and speed through automation, an organization can expect improvements in time to market, integration with the business, responsiveness, code and deployment quality, productivity, visibility and agility. Hence the biggest beneficiary here will be the organization itself.
